Where better to put down a blanket and get out the sandwiches than Oakthorpe picnic site? Located in the heart of the National Forest and part of the Willesley Woods complex, this six-hectare site provides a beautiful backdrop to any outdoor trip. The quiet, scenic setting of grassland, wildflowers and woodland is in stark contrast to the hard labour, noise and black dust that would have been present during its former times as Oakthorpe colliery. The colourful gates at the entrance to the area give a nod to the site’s coal-mining past. There are well-maintained paths throughout and a lake to admire during your visit, as well as wildlife to spot.
