About the National Forest

The National Forest is one of the boldest environmentally-led regeneration initiatives in the country – transforming a post-industrial landscape by creating a forest across 200 square miles of the Midlands, linking the ancient remnant forests of Charnwood and Needwood.

30 years of transformation

In the early 90s, large swathes of the Midlands landscape had been scarred by centuries of coal mining and clay extraction. Since then, we have been transforming this place from black to green through the planting of millions of trees.

A forest in the oldest sense

The National Forest is a 'forest' in the old sense of the word: not wall to wall trees but a distinctly wooded landscape that provides a setting within which people live, work and learn. It is made up of a mosaic of landscapes and land uses: towns and villages, industry, roads and canals, industrial heritage, new developments, farms, schools, open space, rolling hills, river flood plains, all framed by woodland.

As a charity, we are continuing to transform the Forest into a beacon for sustainability. Growing a place that demonstrates that people and nature can thrive together.

The team behind the National Forest

The National Forest and all that it achieves is down to the passionate communities, individuals, and businesses who are part of making positive change happen. However, the National Forest Company, a charity and non-profit institution established in April 1995, leads on the creation, management and monitoring of the National Forest.

Where we are

The National Forest is right in the heart of the country, embracing 200 square miles of the Midlands. It spans across parts of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire, and sits between the cities of Leicester, Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham. The M1 runs through it, plus the A38 and A42. It’s main towns and villages include Burton upon Trent (famous for its brewing), Coalville and Swadlincote (formerly associated with the clay and coal mining industries) and the historic town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
