Normandy Wood is a place for peaceful reflection on the beauty of nature and the tragedy of conflict and war. This 2.4-hectare planting, near Packington, was named to commemorate the D-Day Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 during World War II. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the western front. The wood, owned by North West Leicestershire District Council, is dedicated to those who fought and those who died in the invasion as a living memorial to their bravery and sacrifice in the cause of freedom. The wood planting was completed in 1996, consisting of native broadleaf woodland with a mix of principally oak, ash, hazel and field maple, together with woody shrubs. A public footpath crosses the site and internal paths enable visitors to wander around the wood.
