Summary

The 75-hectare reclaimed colliery site is owned by Leicestershire County Council, and situated between Bagworth and Thornton. The former Desford Colliery site is made up of woodland, grassland, heathland, lakes and ponds, with wetland habitats for wildfowl and aquatic plants. A pit wheel sits on an island in the centre of the largest pool as a reminder of the site’s industrial past.

The demonstration woodland on the upper slopes shows different techniques for woodland establishment and maintenance on reclaimed colliery spoil. One plot shows the growth which can be achieved with fast growing poplars, which can be harvested within five years to produce timber and energy. An area to the east of the site, near the railway line, has been set aside for the creation of heathland.
