Summary

Whether you fancy a spot of weeding or a venue for an eco-wedding, the community-owned Whistlewood Common is home to a surprising number of events and activities. This ten-acre site, near Melbourne, Derbyshire, was bought in 2013 by a local social enterprise, with the support of the National Forest Company. Previously arable land, the site has since flourished, staging everything from children’s parties to yoga retreats, as well as becoming a habitat for an increasing amount of wildlife.

This social enterprise base provides a focal point for the community – it offers a range of workshops, including firewalking, rag rugging and stick making, and provides camping facilities such as staying in a yurt. Many events are based in and around the Roundhouse building, developed by the community since purchasing the site. The community group has also planted and maintained thousands of trees, installed paths to ensure access for all, created a community garden and started a forest garden. Many events that are staged are wildlife-based, such as the early morning chorus walk and breakfast.

There are many ways to get involved including volunteering in tasks such as orchard maintenance, food-growing and administrative and business roles.

Whistlewood Common offers an opportunity to explore nature and enhance personal wellbeing, while located close to all the pubs and facilities of nearby Melbourne.
