Summary
A woodland home to foxes and badgers, Top Wood is a flourishing haven for wildlife, benefiting from 100,000 trees having been planted with our support since 1996. The site is a mixture of woodland, grassland and ponds and has stunning views across the Trent Valley and surrounding countryside. Top Wood may be young, but it forms an important buffer to the ancient woodland of nearby Grange Wood, and in time the species will move between the sites.
Top Wood has a long agricultural history, with undulating ground in places that is a remnant of the ridge and furrow ploughing methods practised in medieval times. An embankment from an old mineral railway harks back to the area’s coal mining past. Top Wood was purchased by the Woodland Trust in 1996 and the Trust has worked with local schoolchildren and volunteers to carry out the planting. The wood contains larch, oak and a mix of broadleaved trees.
