Summary
Snibston Colliery Park is an area of nearly 40 hectares that has been transformed from its mining and industrial past into a haven for nature with mixed habitats including wild flower meadow and woodland. You can see the original colliery buildings and machinery close up, but all traces of mining are now gone with the area now an important ecological site, and the colliery’s former spoil heap now an area of open grassland.
There are many opportunities for wildlife spotting and you can also enjoy finding the contemporary sculptures which are positioned around the site. Younger children will enjoy the play area and for mountain biking enthusiasts, the park has a ‘blue grade’ bike trail with 4km of specialist trail through physically and technically demanding tracks on and around the original colliery spoil heap. The adjacent skills area is the perfect place to build your mountain biking confidence and learn new skills.
If you are looking to really stretch your legs and spend the day walking, the 14-mile Grange Walk links Snibston with other fascinating sites in the National Forest.
